Installation of the Pool Deck

Although there is a lot that goes into designing, preparing, and installing pool decks, do not feel overwhelmed.  As one of the best paver companies in Orange County, we guide you through the design process before tackling the installation of your pool deck pavers.  This is how we handle the installation process:

  1. Install Coping.  The coping is installed around the edges of the pool.  Depending on what is required of the project, you have the choice between the varying thickness of the pavers.
  2. Prepare Surface – Next, we will prepare the surface of the ground so that your brick or concrete pavers will lay perfectly.
  3. Lay Pavers – The pavers will be put into place in the design that you chose.  Sand will be used to fill the spaces between pavers.
  4. Clear Coat – To avoid stains and mildew a clear coat sealer will be applied.  The sealer will also bring out the vibrant colors of your pavers.

Pavers FAQs

Are concrete pavers durable?

When installed correctly, concrete pavers are 2-3 times stronger than cemented concrete. To achieve this strength, the concrete base should have the correct depth to support the pavers. Paver installation San Diego companies will be of huge help to align the project to industry standards.

What holds paver edges?

The edge materials used when installing pavers is essential to the durability of the design.  The edge restraints are what prevent the pavers from moving and shifting over time.  Typically, the desired materials for this are either concrete or gunite sand.  These materials should be installed to about 1.5 inches in depth surrounding the pavers.

How hard is it cleaning pavers?

Pavers should be cleaned from time to time and can be a DIY project.  You can use a pressure washer to clean your pavers but keep the pressure between 1,000 and 1,200 PSI.  Anything more will ruin the pavers and edges.  If you have stubborn stains it may be better to hire a professional cleaning service for your pavers.

Can concrete pavers be placed atop concrete?

Concrete pavers work best on top of concrete if the surface has no huge cracks and is mostly flat. Elevation at this point can be increased to 1 to 2.5 inches. Typically, the existing concrete is removed and edge restraints like sand, glue, or mortar are used.

How can pavers be repaired?

One of the greatest assets of having pavers installed in your Orange County home is that repairs are fairly simple.  If one paver is broken or needs to be replaced only that one paver needs to be removed.  You can do this by using a flat blade tool and working the stone up out of the ground.  More stubborn stones will need to be broken in order to be removed.  We suggest keeping a few pavers on hand from the installation to use as replacements in the future.  This will ensure the same color match.  As always, if you need help with a paver repair, reach out to Western Outdoor.

What is the best type of paver?

Although there is not one specific “best type” of paver, there are certain pavers that work better for specific projects.  Abrasion index, water absorption rate, and compressive strength play a part in what pavers are good for certain projects.  As one of the top paver installation experts in Orange County, we can help you decide which pavers will be best for the project you want to be done on your home.

Do pavers need to be sealed?

Although sealing the pavers is a personal choice and completely optional, there are benefits to doing so.  Sealing the pavers can help prevent color from fading off of the pavers and help protect against some stains.  Prior to sealing the pavers should be cleaned and completely dried.  Keep in mind that if you choose to seal your pavers they must be maintained and resealed every 2 to 3 years.

How can insects and plants be kept away from pavers?

Using a sealer or a joint and stabilizer product can help control pests and grass from growing between your pavers.  Before using any weed killer or insecticide reach out to an Orange County paver specialist to make sure the products will not cause damage to your pavers.
